A student Union officer who posted an offensive tweet about tragic schoolgirl April Jones has been sacked.
Joey Guy the union?s ?education officer at the University of Central Lancashire, was originally suspended and ? after an internal investigation and disciplinary process, including the right of appeal to an independent panel ? the Union?s Board of Trustees dismissed him.
President at the Preston-based SU Edd Graham-Hyde said: ?In posting the offensive material on Twitter Joey Guy did not faithfully carry out his duties and failed to meet the reasonable standards of conduct expected of him.
?As a consequence of his actions the Union?s reputation has been brought into disrepute and this constitutes gross misconduct in relation to the duties and responsibilities of an elected officer of the Union.
He added: ?The Union?s Trustees and an independent appeal panel have considered the matter ?carefully, taken into account the ?evidence presented and the statements of both parties and the witnesses called.
?It?s decision is final and there is no further right of appeal.?
The decision to dismiss the ?sabbatical officer, who was elected to the position in March this year, was announced to union representatives at a student council meeting on Thursday evening
In accordance with the union?s rules his office as a trustee of the ?union has been vacated.
The union is hoping to elect a new post-holder for the remainder of the current academic year as soon as possible.
April, five, has not been since she went missing from her home in Wales in October and Mark Bridger has since been charged with her abduction and murder.
The comments from Guy, whose position was paid, immediately drew a savage response from other Twitter users who blasted him.
