Pittsburgh's South Side is legendary; a seemingly endless avenue of?bars, restaurants, art galleries, coffee shops, record stores and?more stretches out for?nearly 20?blocks along E. Carson Street, just across the river from downtown. It's definitely the place to be?on a Saturday night, and if you're looking to score, there's never a shortage of hotties crawling the pubs?around 9pm.?
I?remember?drinking my first underage brewski?at a joint?called Duke's, which is sadly no longer there. *wistful tear.?
These days I?troll?Southside for?the food, and at the very end of the drag inside?a converted old gas station, you will discover something very rare in our meatless world - vegan BBQ. The Double Wide Grill does?Pittsburgh proud with a plant-based menu?of smoked, pulled and rubbed?BBQ favorites that keeps me coming back every time I visit home.
I hit up Double Wide the other night with my carnivore pops. Double Wide?caters to?everyone with a selection of?traditional meat-based meals, like beef brisket and spare ribs as well as an extensive?vegetarian/vegan menu for us weirdoes. The kitchen goes to great lengths to ensure the veganocity of the?grub?by preparing it?on separate grills and in?separate deep fryers.?
For the main event, I went with the Pulled Seitan Sandwich. Pretty self-explanatory: strips of?melt-in-your-mouth?seitan smothered in a sweet and tangy Carolina?BBQ sauce on?wheat bread with fries.?Nicely done, Double Wide! This sandwich?screamed with flavor and?had the perfect sauce to seitan ratio?so I could pick it up and eat it without my hands looking like I just left a crime scene.?
There are so many?delicious sounding items on their vegan menu, including the lentil burger, veggie chili, beefless stroganoff, coconut tofu, garlic slaw, shoestring fries and more. Vegan options are clearly marked (Ve), with (V) for?regular vegetarian. Prices are decent, there are 36 craft brewdogs on draft and the?atmosphere is kickass,?retro Texaco station?meets southern BBQ joint meets sports bar meets college?campus hangout.?If you live near?da 'Burgh or are in town for the last couple of home Pirates games, swing over to Double Wide for?some BBQ and an adult beverage. And tell'em The Vegan Man Cave sent you!??
PS.?It's Day 1?of Vegan MoFo 2012. Looking forward to reading how ya'll will be celebrating. This year,?I'm?participating by challenging myself to visit 10 new restaurants and post my reviews.?Thanks to Double Wide Grill, I'm down to nine!
Word to your mommy. ???
