In Good Health ? Celebrate Physical Fitness Month with Exercise ...

We have all heard it and said it, too: ?Do as I say, not as I do.?? I do not want to become one of those people.? Though this past month has been a lazy one!? I don?t know if it was that bit of ?chilly? weather in April that sent me into a rut of laziness or if I just talked myself out of exercise.? Truth be told, I think I am over it but it took more than one pep-talk with myself.? I think I am ready to get moving!? After all, it is May, which is Physical Fitness Month.? We as Americans are ?under-exercised?. ?Sadly, statistics show that less than 15 percent of the American population gets the recommended 30 minutes of exercise a day.? ???

It?s a fact ? we all need physical activity and no one out-grows the need to exercise.? The newest recommendations are promoting aerobic activity for the best health.? No, that does not mean you need to pull out your old Richard Simmons tapes or put on your Jane Fonda outfit.? You do not even need to go to a gym.? Basically, an adult (18 to 64 years) will need to exercise for 2 hours and 30 minutes a week if they choose to do a ?moderate? level of exercise (or about 30 minutes a day, most days of the week.)? Grown-ups that are vigorous exerciser?s need 1 hour and 15 minutes weekly. In general terms, the difference here is that moderate exercisers may sweat, but can still carry on a conversation. A vigorous exerciser is breathing rapidly so may only be able to speak in short phrases. For more info on types of moderate and vigorous exercise, click here.

Our kids need even more exercise. Children (6-17 years) need 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day and again, most of that should be either moderate or vigorous.? Important for kids is that they get a variety of activity that is enjoyable and developmentally appropriate. For more information, on exercise recommendations, click here. ??

We all should celebrate ?Physical Fitness Month?.? And, please do me a favor and try celebrating Physical Fitness Month with exercise.? Walking is a great way to start working more exercise into your lifestyle.? Walk as a family, as a couple, find a walking buddy, even if it is your dog!? We are all lucky to live or work in this community that is embracing health and wellness with so many wonderful events and programs planned.?

So the recipe this week includes several ?local ingredients? to help you get started with a more active lifestyle.? Sample them all!? The FYI (Fit Youth Initiative?s Fit Youth Initiative?s seventh annual community summer walking challenge ?Get Movin? Thru History? ?to Union Hospital Community Walking Program?s Community Walking Program.?? The real goal is that participation in these local venues will help you establish a healthy habit!? And hopefully, you will be inspired and motivated to stay active all year long. Other local events to keep you moving include the Dennison Railroad History Walk (May 1 to August 1), the Zoar Lake Native Bird Scavenger Hunt and the Kid?s 2 Mile Run at Schoenbrunn State Memorial both on May 12, the Healthy Ohio Heart Walk May 14, Summer Safety Day at the Uhrichsville Water Park June 8, ?Historic Zoar Village?s Scrabble Walk June 9, the Schoenbrunn Village Scavenger Hunt and Hike June 16, the Tuscarawas River Canoe and Kayak Race July 7, the Ft. Lauren?s History Walk July 21, and a Guided Hike at the Norma Johnson Center July 28.? And, I am sure there are others!?

The benefits of being healthy and active far outweigh most health risks associated with inactivity.? Remember, physical activity is generally safe for everyone. The health benefits you gain from being active are far greater than the chances of getting hurt.? If you haven?t been active in a while, start slowly and build up, plus here are some other tips.?? With so many events planned this summer, if you always meant to get a little more exercise, start with a personal pep-talk.? It did work for me.? Just remember, listen to yourself!?
