LONDON (AP) ? British police arrested six people Tuesday as part of the investigation into phone hacking in the British media.
The Metropolitan police said five men and one woman were arrested in various locations in and around greater London. It said their premises were being searched. Police said the arrests took place between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. Tuesday.
All six were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, the force said in a statement.
The arrests are part of a probe into phone hacking by journalists and private investigators working for British tabloids, notably Rupert Murdoch's the News of the World, which closed in July after a string of misdeeds was exposed.
Police said a 43-year-old woman was arrested at her home in Oxfordshire and is being questioned by police there.
Also arrested were a 49-year-old man in Oxfordshire, a 39-year-old man in Hampshire, a 46-year-old man in West London, a 38-year-old man in Hertforshire and a 48-year-old man in East London.
A number of arrests have also been made in a separate probe investigating corrupt activities between police and the press.
A judge-led inquiry into media ethics has heard extensive testimony about wrongdoing by tabloid journalists, and Murdoch's company has reached cash settlements with a number of victims.
